Recommended Resources (books, pamphlets, & audios) –Under Continuous Improvement–

College & Career

  • Thriving at College, Make Great Friends, Keep Your Faith, and Get Ready for the Real World, by Alex Chediak
Ten common mistakes, how to avoid them, how to thrive, how to NOT waste your college years!

Disorders  (labels from the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders IV)

  • PTSD (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder), by Dr. Richard K. Thomas
Perfect for trauma experienced in war, crime, accidents, and disasters.  A great self-study book, and great for a counselor to use with a suffering person.  Brings the light and hope of God’s word into the darkness of the traumatized mind.  One of the few biblical books we have seen on PTSD.

Emotions

  • Anger & Stress, by Wayne Mack
What is righteous anger?  What is sinful anger?  Conquering sinful anger.  Read it and use it!
  • Uprooting Anger, Biblical Help for a Common Problem, by Robert D. Jones
Perhaps the best book on anger we know of.  Most angry people are blind to their sinful anger.  This helps recognize it and get to the root of it.

Faith & Trust in God  (the best way to conquer Fear, Anxiety, Doubt, Confusion, and other emotional and thinking problems)

  • Comforts from the Cross, by Elyse Fitzpatrick
A thirty one day daily devotion that will refresh your mind and your worship.  Gospel truths that transform.
  • Living the Cross Centered Life, Keeping the Gospel the Main Thing, by C. J. Mahaney
Live every day for Christ. Why and how the gospel of Jesus Christ changes lives. Escape legalism, condemnation, and today’s culture of striving for feelings instead of holiness.
  • Trusting God, by Jerry Bridges,
Worried? Fearful? Anxious? Confused? This book helps you understand and accept what God is doing in your life.
  • When People Are Big And God Is Small–Overcoming Peer Pressure, Codependency, and the Fear of Man, by Edward T. Welch
Describes how fearing people, rather than fearing God, affects our lives and causes us to sin.

Family

  • DSYfunctional: a mini series from the book of Genesis on the life of Joseph, by Pastor Zach Terry
Seven podcasts of sermons by Pastor Zach explaining what we learn from the sinful and righteous actions of Joseph and his family.  “Dysfunctional” families are families full of sin–which is cause for great hope because God’s word can transform families!  You may listen to the sermons at the “DSYfunctional” link to Capshaw Baptists website or download the podcasts by opening your  iTunes app, search for “Zach Terry”, click on “Maximum Life With Zach Terry” and download.

Food & Eating

  • Love to Eat / Hate to Eat, Breaking the Bondage of Destructive Eating Habits, by Elyse Fitzpatrick
Not a quick-fix–a real fix.  Not a diet book–a “new” way to think about food.  Enjoy food as God intended without abusing the temple of God.

God: Knowledge of Him

  • Systematic Theology Series “God is”, by Pastor Zach Terry
Seven podcasts by Pastor Zach on who God is.  What you REALLY believe about God determines how you interpret your experiences.  If that never occurred to you, consider that your reaction to pleasant and unpleasant circumstances is determined by your knowledge and true beliefs about the attributes of God.  True beliefs are evidenced by your emotions and your actions not your words!  If you want to hear more about this, contact the counseling ministry on the Contact tab.

Immorality

  • Every Man’s Battle, by Stephen Arterburn and Fred Stoeker
One man’s battle against sexual lust and the practical things he learned about combating immoral lusts.  Recommend this book be used for practical steps that supplement primary teaching focused on deepening trust in Christ (Living the Cross Centered Life, by Mahaney, would be good).

Marriage

  • The Excellent Wife, by Martha Peace
Excellent book about being a godly wife.  Complements “The Exemplary Husband.”
  • The Exemplary Husband, by Stuart Scott
Best single book we know of to learn what it is to be a godly husband.  Complements “The Excellent Wife.” Covers beliefs about God, responsibilities, commitments, and common sins of husbands.  One man told me, “Nobody ever told me this before!”
  • Song of Solomon, A Study of, by Pastor Zach Terry
Eight podcasts by Pastor Zach on how to strengthen your marriage.  Lessons from the Song of Solomon.  Loving each other, serving each other, arguments and sin, sex, and other topics relevant to all married couples.  Don’t tolerate a stale marriage!  Apply God’s word and His leading and have the peaceful, joyful, fulfilling marriage that God intended.
  • Strengthening Your Marriage, by Wayne Mack
Covers ALL the major areas of marriage.  Extensive worksheets in back of every chapter.  Thoroughly teaches application of scripture to all areas.

Parenting

  • A Kid’s Catechism, by Pastor Zach Terry
An excellent way to teach your young children the basic truths about God.
  • Give Them Grace, Dazzling Your Kids With The Love of Jesus, by Elyse M. Fitzpatrick & Jessica Thompson (Elyse’s daughter)
  • Shepherding a Child’s Heart (and separate workbook), by Tedd Tripp
The BEST book on parenting we know of.  BEST for all ages.  BEST covers how to talk to your kids, how to get at the heart issues that cause disobedience/disrespect, how to apply God’s grace instead of legalism (the MOST frequent parental mistake), and how to discipline your kids.
  • You Never Stop Being a Parent, Thriving in Relationship with Your Adult Children, by Jim Newheiser & Elyse Fitzpatrick
Real situations guided by biblical teaching.  Practical help for all parents, including hurting parents.
  • When Good Kids Make Bad Choices, Help and Hope for Hurting Parents, by Elyse Fitzpatrick & Jim Newheiser
Biblical, practical, and real–what to do if your child refuses to cooperate, responds with anger and even hatred, or even rejects the Christian faith and even Christian values.

Sin

  • Counterfeit Gods, The Empty Promises of Money, Sex, and Power, and the Only Hope That Matters, by Timothy Keller
Exands on “Idols of the Heart” by Fitzpatrick to describe how Christians can avoid the major idols of our culture.
  • Idols of the Heart, Learning to Long for God Alone, by Elyse Fitzpatrick
Focuses on the cause of all intentional sin–the idols that we put before God, the things we think, say, and do when we are not satisfied with God.  Awareness of our own idols can astonish, surprise, and give hope.  Despite what the culture teaches, our idols do not have to be permanent!
  • In the Arena of the Mind, by John Vandegriff
Overcoming hurtful thoughts, self pity, fear, lustful thoughts, and pride.  Transforming the mind to replace sinful thinking with thoughts that are true, admirable, pure, and excellent. (Philippians 4:8).
